20-22 July 2012
New Zealand opera singer, Jared Holt, is preparing a programme of beautiful music for a beautiful venue. Jared is one of three opera singers chosen to perform at the luxury Marlborough Sounds resort, Bay Of Many Coves, from July 20 to 22.
Bay Of Many Coves, the only five star resort in the Marlborough Sounds, saw the incredible synergy between the richly evocative music of opera and their glorious venue and engaged NBR New Zealand Opera to provide guests with an Opera Lovers’ Weekend.
Jared, who has recently returned from an illustrious career in England and Europe, is joined by Auckland sopranos, Morag McDowell and Emma Roxburgh, both Resident Artists with the NBR New Zealand Opera.
Jared, a lyric baritone, won the Mobil Song Quest in 2000 and then left for further study and singing engagements in England. He has performed leading and supporting roles with major opera companies including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Teatro Giuseppe Verdi, Trieste, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Opera Australia.
Back in New Zealand Jared is keen to sing arias that paint a musical picture of the impressive natural setting that surrounds the resort. Handel’s Ombra mai fu, from the opera Xerxes, is sung to a tree and is an obvious choice for Bay of Many Coves.
“I’ve heard about the serenity of the Resort. The peace and relaxation provides a wonderful departure from modern day life. I will work on a repertoire that has variation and beauty,” he says.
Jared is looking forward to singing to guests in a comfortable, intimate setting. He wants people to enjoy and appreciate the music.
“My challenge is to provide a good show and a great experience,” he says. “I want the audience to appreciate that I love singing and enjoy every opportunity to perform. If I can convey to them the emotion and physical vitality of singing I’ll be pleased,” he comments.
These days Jared is a family man. He is married to Nicola, a New Zealand soprano who specialises in early music, and balances his singing with his work as a lawyer in the law firm, Kensington Swan. As a student Jared completed a Bachelor’s degree in Classics and a Law degree with Honours.
The law firm supports the balance “and allows me to sing when I can,” he comments.
Co-owner of Bay of Many Coves, Murray McCaw, intends the Opera Lovers’ Weekend to appeal not just to opera buffs but to those who want to be introduced to opera in a splendid 5 star setting.
There’s always been a close affinity between celebration and music. Food and wine play an important part in many operas. That winning combination of the finest of Italian food and great arias from composers such as Mozart and Puccini will be a feature of the Opera Lovers’ Weekend.
Guests will be welcomed with a Bellini cocktail on their arrival and the centerpiece will be a six course lunch prepared by Executive Chef, Hannes Bareiter, on the Saturday. Between courses the soloists will entertain.
The Opera Lovers’ Weekend is one of a number of exclusive events planned for 2012 by the Bay of Many Coves. Other weekends include a 60’s and 70’s revival weekend in June featuring Nick Tansley and Andrew London and the photographic retreats with renowned photographer, Simon Woolf.
Prices for the Opera Lovers Weekend start from $810 per person.
