10.30am
Cruise to Motuara Island

Situated in the outer Queen Charlotte Sound, Motuara Island is one of four reserve islands not inhabited by humans. This island has become an important site for the some of the Department of Conservation's (DOC) programs for rare and endangered species. Once farmed, the island is now well covered in regenerating native bush and most importantly it is predator-free. This ideal environment is now being used to enhance the populations of the South Island saddleback, Maud Island frog, Marlborough green gecko and as a nursery for the very rare Okarito brown kiwi chicks. All seem to be thriving.

Join our guides as we photograph other bird species that call the island home such as the native wood pigeons (Kereru), fantails, perhaps a blue penguin, bellbirds, NZ falcons, various oystercatchers, reef herons, pied shags, spotted shags, little shags and the always inquisitive South Island robins. Because there are no predators on Motuara, the birds don't appear to be bothered by us humans, allowing for viewing at very close quarters.

This is Simon's dream environment and he will ensure you make the most of this very special opportunity.

What people are saying

Simon Woolf is an amazing photographer. I realised that you can have raw talent, but must always be striving to learn more and get better so that raw talent becomes polished.

... an amazing, beautiful place to stay. The staff bent over backwards to make our stay memorable, they were so friendly you almost felt like family. The food was incredible – words can't describe the experience. The people I shared this journey with were amazing too.

It motivated me to keep pushing myself and to keep learning. So was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY worth every cent, I loved every moment.
